Magnetic PendulumHang a metal bob on a string over three magnets and let go. Which magnet it finally sticks to depends so finely on where you released it that the map of outcomes is a fractal — every colour border has more borders inside it, forever. This is Newton’s clockwork physics, fully deterministic — yet in 1963 Edward Lorenz found that such systems can be unpredictable anyway: a hair’s difference in the start blows up into a totally different end. The pendulum became the classroom demo of that “sensitive dependence on initial conditions” — chaos.
