Multi-Scale Turing PatternsStart from pure static. At every pixel, blur the image at several zoom levels at once and ask — at which zoom is the neighbourhood most even? Nudge that pixel a hair lighter or darker to match, then stretch the contrast back out. Repeat. Fine ripples, coarse blobs and everything between negotiate over the same canvas until it settles into skin, coral, hide and fingerprint.Alan Turing's 1952 reaction–diffusion idea gives one length scale a pattern. Jonathan McCabe (2010) ran many scales together and let each spot pick its own; here the blurs are mip-pyramid lookups on the GPU, so a step that once took minutes runs live.
