No storm, no collision, just the ordinary equation for waves in deep water or light in a fibre, doing this on its own.Howell Peregrine found the exact solution in 1983: a single rational bump riding the nonlinear Schrödinger equation iψ_t + ½ψ_xx + |ψ|²ψ = 0, born at infinity, peaking at exactly 3× the background amplitude, and decaying back to infinity — a freak wave with a closed-form birth and death. It sat as a curiosity until Kibler's team folded time into an optical fibre in 2010 and watched it appear in light, and Chabchoub's wave tank confirmed the same shape in water in 2011.
