Rotating Flows A tank of water spins fast on a turntable. A low bump sits on the floor, yet a slow drift across the tank swerves around a tall invisible pillar rising from it — the Taylor column. The journey: in the spinning frame the Coriolis force dominates; balancing it with pressure (the Taylor–Proudman theorem, 1916) forces steady flow to be identical at every height. The floor bump is then felt all the way up, so the fluid goes around it as if it were a full-depth cylinder. Turn rotation down and the flow simply rides over the bump.
