Stable FluidsA real simulation of hot smoke: a jet of warm gas rises off a vent at the base, curls into vortices, and mixes into a turbulent plume. Simulations kept blowing up until Jos Stam’s 1999 “Stable Fluids”: trace each parcel backwards to see where it came from, and the method never explodes no matter the time step. It won him an Academy Award.
