Chirikov Standard MapA spinning rotor gets a kick once per turn, its size set by one dial. Start hundreds of rotors and follow each forever. Weak kicks: everyone stays on their own smooth ribbon. Turn the dial up and ribbons dissolve into a chaotic haze, but tidy island chains survive inside it.Boris Chirikov wrote this map in 1969 as the essence of Hamiltonian chaos. Its last unbroken ribbon — protected by the golden ratio, the hardest number to approximate — snaps at kick strength K ≈ 0.9716, the moment order gives way to global chaos.
